What People Learn When They Switch from Luxury Trips to Budget Travel

Everyone knows that when it comes to travel, there are two options: either you go on a budget or you go all in on a luxury trip. However, the biggest difference between the two isn’t usually the noisy dorm room you might have to share or the overly bright airport you’ll have to sleep in on your way back. It is realizing that travel feels much more different when you’re not the one doing all the heavy lifting to figure things out.

Who Does the Heavy-Lifting

When you take a luxury trip, most of the tough decisions are already made for you. You step off your plane and find a waiting car ready to take you to your hotel suite. Someone has chosen the vehicle, the route, the refreshments you’ll have in the car, and any other perks you might enjoy, such as the restaurant you might visit or even the museum. But on a budget trip, you’ll have to figure out which cab to take, the best route that will save you the most money, which detours to take, and how much they will cost, what to eat, and whether it is in a restaurant or a street-food stall. The memories you create will be very different.

However, when you’re on a budget, you’ll realize that instead of spending extra on a bigger, fancier room, you can save that money and use it for something memorable. Think about going on a local food tour, exploring a trip not listed in the guidebook, or even purchasing tickets to a small live concert that locals love. Money then takes on a very different perspective, shifting the trip from being a “how much did it cost” experience to a “how many unique memories did we create” adventure.

Certainly, comfort will be redefined as you go. Luxury hotel lobbies, complimentary bottles of Champagne from the manager, and large bathtubs overlooking a desired cityscape or natural view might become things of the past. However, this doesn’t mean the trip will be uncomfortable. Comfort will come in a very different way. The owner of your accommodation will remember your name, maybe even invite you to a loved one’s wedding years later, and the cook at the street cart you frequent will strike up a genuine conversation that could lead to knowing them on a deeper level. While the experience might not be as polished as traveling in luxury, it will feel more authentic.

The Social Side of Travel

As you might expect, the social side of travel will also change. Where most interactions were with staff or other guests since the setting is on the luxury side, you will now have the chance to openly interact with locals on train rides and at cheap hostel bars. You will get the chance to connect with fellow travelers while sharing kitchens or during walks. The likelihood of meeting more everyday folks like students, remote workers, and even older couples and families will increase because the environment is virtually different.

While you can choose from either traveling on a budget or simply taking the luxury route, you should know that some travelers nowadays opt to mix it up. Take a few days enjoying the order found in luxury hotels, then switch it up with a week of hostels and street food. Why have one when you can have both?
